Monday 15 August - The Ring of Kerry

The peninsula west of Killarney has some of the nicest scenery in Ireland, with the highest mountains (McGillicuddy's Reeks), beautiul lakes, and some excellent coastal views. The coast road which circles the peninsula is known as the "Ring of Kerry".

The weather was not ideal, being heavily overcast, but at least the rain held off.

The road is generally average-to-poor, being very narrow and twisting. Large numbers of tour coaches, maniacs in Porsches and the inevitabe Nissan Microbes made for a stressful drive. But the scenery and the lovely little towns we passed through made it worth while.

Kilarney is the largest town in the area and is an attractive old-style Irish town with narrows street and colourful shops and houses.
