Thursday 25 August: Skye to Inverness

From Skye we headed east over the beautiful bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh, then on to Eillen Donan castle at Bornie. This is probably the most-photographed castle in Scotland, and is just as lovely "in the flesh" as in the pictures we have seen. For once we were lucky with the weather, and had some good light before the rain set in again.

We then drove down through Glen Garry and up the full length of Loch Ness. There were plenty of people out looking for the monster, but the only monster we saw was the one under the hood of the Mondeo. £49.00 for a tank of petrol!!

Our B&B is called the Roadside Croft, and is a fair way out of Inverness, on the Ullapool Road. We were greeted by the proprietor Cathie, who made us very welcome and forced us to eat huge amounts of home-cooked cakes and sweets. The place is very nice with a lovely big lounge. Each room (there re only two) has its own shower, in a strange little cubicle like a phone box. There is a shared bathroom and toilet.

After settling in, we drove back into Inverness, got lost a couple of times, and had a look around the town and its castle. Inverness is often described as a town without character, and I think we would have to agree. Mind you we only spent a little time in the town centre. It may well be a nice place to live.

Tomorrow we will have another look around the area, and head down to Edinburgh, via Perth.
