Friday 2 September: Peak District and Oxford

Woke up in Bradwell to see a thick fog over everything. Hmm... e had arranged for our Nikonian friend Brian Tilley to go out photographing with Paul. Brian duly arrived bright & early, and he and Paul went to the Ladybower Reservoir. The fog had lifted, and some good pictures resulted. Back to the "Shoulder of Mutton" for some breakfast, afetr an unfortunate mixup with the landlady.

Oxford is perhaps the most famous of all the university towns, with its colleges dating back to the 14th century. It's also a terrible place for traffic, so we chose a B&B at Witney, a nice little town just outside Oxford.

Oxford itself was rather different from our expectations - we had imagined the colleges grouped together in a green leafy area over the river from the town. (Thinking of Cambridge, perhaps?). In fact the colleges are all scattered throughout the town, side-by-side with shops and cafes. Most of the colleges have a nice green quadrangle surrounded by the (very old) buildings.

We arrived too late for the guided walking tours - the last one goes at 3:00pm(!) - so we wandered around on our own for a few hours before catching the bus back to Witney. Not the most successful day of our trip, but at least the B&B was very nice.
