Tuesday 30 August: Dales, Fells and Lakes
From Robin Hood's Bay we headed west across the Yorkshire Moors, skirted around the big towns, and found ourselves in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Sue always wanted to see James Herriot country: Arr vetinery - thee be fixin' my old cow..
The weather was reasonable, and we got some pretty good photos of the very green fields with their drystone walls and black-faced sheep. We drove through the heart of Wensleydale, but didn't see a cheese factory. (Rather sad for Wallace and Grommit fans like us).
After that we headed on to the Lake District, England's favourite holiday destination. Through Kendal and Windemere, through some beautiful (if hazy) scenery to Keswick. Keswick is yet another British town with narrow winding streets and too much traffic. After being lost for some time (does this sound familiar?) we were rescued by a nice lady who gave us the directions to our B&B. It seems we had been within a few hundred metres of it, but the streets didn't connect.
Had a walk around town (very nice really) and then down to Derwent Water, which was very lovely, if hazy.
